Donkey Kong Bananza on Nintendo’s New Console Shows There’s More Than Meets the Eye

I must admit here that Nintendo once again proved its love for surprises by unveiling Donkey Kong Bananza at the end of the Switch 2 event, a title combining classic 3D action with flashes of 2D gameplay, all starring our favorite red-sporting gorilla.

If I may take a trip down memory lane, I remember when a low-res image of Donkey Kong had folks reacting like TikTokers doing Marge Simpson impressions. Let me be clear: you misjudged it then, and you’re still not getting it right.

Donkey Kong Serving Pure Power and Style Right Now

Seriously, who else pulls off overalls better? Chuck Norris, of course. Maybe Denzel Washington, just by owning the room. But none come close to the power and presence of the one and only Donkey Kong, now finally suited up.

It’s looking quite funny how Nintendo held off so long before clothing Donkey Kong. A character running around with nothing but a tie seems like Ana’s kind of story, but DK has been doing just that for quite a while.

Well, setting style choices aside, wow, this game looks incredible. Not every classic series benefits from a larger world, but sometimes it’s exactly what they need.

For a powerful ape like Donkey Kong, that’s definitely true. I’m excited to see how traversal plays out when he’s not limited to a flat plane.

Nintendo’s classic charm and humor are clearly present, which bodes well. This game could easily rival the success of Super Mario Odyssey. And as for that unclear image from two months ago, it no longer holds any weight.

The Trailer Shows Nintendo’s Ambition to Make Donkey Kong a Leading Figure

I’m really looking forward to this game because I’ve always thought Nintendo has plenty of characters ready to take center stage and carry the spotlight. We got a taste of that recently with none other than Princess Peach: Showtime!

Well, at this point, I can well say that Nintendo seems to be continuing its celebration of the Super Mario Bros. Movie’s success with this trailer, putting the spotlight on the supporting characters and making room for all.

Though Donkey Kong 64 was quite fantastic and newer platformers held their own, they often came across as side stories. Donkey Kong Bananza seems to be Nintendo’s first all-in effort on DK since 64, and I’m eager for the July 17, 2025 launch.
