Nintendo has announced the Switch 2, featuring new additions like mouse mode and GameChat. Developers had pushed for better performance, and President Shuntaru Furukawa confirmed it’s a key improvement during a recent Q&A.
“Developers have needed more powerful hardware for years now,” Furukawa said. He explained that the upgrade was necessary to bring fresh gaming experiences to life.
In fact, he added that Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bonanza just wouldn’t have worked on the old Nintendo Switch.

Furukawa confirmed that Nintendo began developing the Switch 2 as early as 2019. True to form, the company’s goal was to create hardware that could bring bold ideas to life.
“We’re working on several exciting new titles that will push the console’s potential,” he said. “We want it to redefine what players expect and keep delivering surprises.”
Furukawa responded to skepticism about innovation in the new console by highlighting that the original Switch represented a full-scale redesign.
He further described it as a product deeply reflective of Nintendo’s creative identity and attention to detail.
He also emphasized that the company’s strength has always been in harmonizing hardware and software development, a key to delivering distinctive gaming experiences.
Set for a June 5 release, the Nintendo Switch 2 aims to make a strong debut with high-profile titles including Mario Kart World, Donkey Kong Bonanza, and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, showcasing the console’s capabilities from day one.
