In Short:
- Fans rejoice as Digimon Story: Time Stranger breaks the silence with an October release, seven years after the last entry
- According to Bandai Namco’s specs, console players, even on PS5 Pro, can expect the game to be limited to 30fps
- Bandai Namco hasn’t clarified the console limitations, sparking backlash among longtime fans
Digimon Story Time Stranger: At Sony’s unexpected State of Play this week, fans learned that Digimon Story: Time Stranger will debut on consoles this October 3.
With Hacker’s Memory having released more than seven years ago, Time Stranger was shaping up to be a major return for the Digimon Story series. But after the disappointing framerate details surfaced, fan enthusiasm has noticeably cooled.
Digimon Rule the Digital World, Just Not at 60fps
As reported by Gematsu through a Bandai Namco update, the game is capped at 30fps on PS and Xbox Series systems, while PC players may achieve 60fps with the right setup.
It’s a major letdown for those on consoles, considering the game targets only current-gen devices, meaning no older PlayStation 4 or Xbox One versions are involve.
In response on Reddit, a gamer accused the developers of “total incompetence,” a view shared by others who said the framerate issues would push them to wait for a price drop instead of purchasing at release.
While their frustration is understandable, one fan reminded everyone, “I’m just happy there’s a legitimate new Digimon game coming.” It’s a shame the game is being held back seemingly without cause. At least there are more than 450 Digimon to explore.
Digimon Story: Time Stranger
Set to release in 2025, Digimon Story: Time Stranger is a new RPG from Media.Vision and Bandai Namco Entertainment for PlayStation 5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
Well, its the seventh game in the Story series, arriving eight years after Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory, and the first to appear on Xbox and include an official English dub.
First revealed on December 8, 2017, just before Cyber Sleuth – Hacker’s Memory’s release, producer Kazumasa Habu explained that making a new PlayStation 4 game from scratch would require four years.
To keep fans from waiting too long, both Hacker’s Memory and the new Story game were developed simultaneously, with Hacker’s Memory releasing first.
