Nintendo Switch 2 Direct wrapped up with the big reveal fans have been waiting for: the new Donkey Kong Bananza game.

Featuring a strikingly colorful visual style, this Donkey Kong game presents a new design for the main character that stays consistent with his recent, somewhat contentious appearance.

Despite opinions on the art style, the platforming shines. DK speeds through expansive environments that feel open-ended, where climbing and digging through the terrain, similar to Minecraft happens to be a core part of the experience.

In an official statement, producer Kouchi Kawamoto highlighted that the Switch 2’s improved power grants players the exhilarating freedom to smash anything they want in Donkey Kong Bananza.

From the tone here, it’s clear I’m a fan, and it’s especially exciting given that Donkey Kong 64, the character’s only previous 3D platforming title, came out way back in 1999.

It’s been a slow stretch for any games featuring the figure responsible for Nintendo’s early success, so seeing him headline a major Switch 2 release is pretty exciting.
