If the idea of a fourth Jurassic World film had you groaning, you’re not alone. But box office performance doesn’t always match public skepticism, and with Jurassic World Rebirth, the studio is likely banking on big profits, even if the reviews are just average.
This Wednesday’s release of Jurassic World: Rebirth officially tips the scale in favor of the World era over the original Park trilogy. And while it’s earned just 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, that score still doesn’t make it the most poorly reviewed film in the dinosaur saga.
Jurassic World Rebirth Crushes Dominion in Every Way That Matters
Dominion earned the dubious distinction of being the worst-rated Jurassic film, scoring just 29%. In a series built on dinosaur thrills, it’s no wonder audiences were let down when the movie veered off to focus on insects instead.
Even with its disappointing Rotten Tomatoes score, Jurassic World Dominion made a massive splash financially, earning more than $1 billion worldwide. Universal’s billion-dollar streak with the World films is likely what keeps the series alive, even though none have touched the legacy of Jurassic Park.
The original Jurassic Park from 1993 earned a stellar 91% rating and was the only film from the first trilogy to cross the billion-dollar threshold.
Rebirth now ranks fourth in the franchise’s critical rankings and holds the best score since Jurassic World (72%). But considering Dominion made more than a billion with a mere 29%, it’s clear Universal is betting on crowd turnout, not critical acclaim.
A big part of Rebirth’s marketing strategy is centered around merchandising, and the Mosasaurus is leading the charge. Known for delivering one of the franchise’s most over-the-top death scenes, the aquatic dino is returning in Jurassic World: Rebirth.
In celebration, fans can now grab it as a Funko Pop or in the form of a massive action figure.
