Here’s Why Skipping the Starting Boost May Lead to More Wins in Mario Kart World

Mario Kart World’s competitive scene is evolving, with players skipping the famous Rocket Start to outsmart opponents.

Since its introduction in the SNES version, this mechanic has been about gaining an early edge. But times, and strategies are clearly changing.

Patience Pays in Power-Ups

YouTuber ShortCat recently showcased a surprising strategy that’s gaining traction, avoid the Rocket Start.

The idea is to stay in a lower position early to receive superior items, such as triple mushrooms, making it easier to surge forward later. Gyrados and several creators have been credited with bringing this idea into the spotlight.

The way items are handed out in Mario Kart World differs significantly from Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Previously, trailing players had to make do with basic power-ups like a single mushroom. Now, with more competitors and better chances for strong items, manipulating early race positions is easier than ever.

This kind of strategy isn’t new, “Snaking” is just one of many player-made metas over the years. But if this one dominates the game, it could drain some of the fun unless Nintendo intervenes with a gameplay tweak.

Mario Kart World

Mario Kart World, launched for the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, offers a fresh take on the series’ tried-and-true kart racing. Alongside classic character-based gameplay.

It features an open-world mode, off-road enhancements, an elimination race type, and a slew of unlockable character outfits. For the first time, up to 24 players can race together.

Back in 2017, Nintendo began working on it for the Switch, though development moved to Switch 2 in 2020 to fully realize its vision. Rather than call it “Mario Kart 9”, the “World” title was chosen to represent a brand-new approach to gameplay.

With a soundtrack boasting over 200 tracks and guided by Atsuko Asahi, the game celebrates the musical legacy of the Mario franchise through dynamic remixes.
