Xbox’s Future Console: Xbox’s recent track record shows signs of struggle, particularly with its exclusives increasingly appearing on PlayStation platforms.
Aware that it’s unlikely to surpass PlayStation in the console war, Xbox is now experimenting with alternative strategies to stay in the game.
Turning the next Xbox into a console-PC hybrid via Steam integration is gaining traction as a serious strategy.
With Microsoft long trailing behind PlayStation, this shift could reshape its future, especially now that a new Xbox and AMD partnership video appears to hint at just that.
Xbox’s Future Console: Xbox Confirms Its Next Console to Be A PC
On the official Xbox YouTube channel (via Polygon), president Sarah Bond announced a multi-year partnership with AMD to design chips for the next generation of Xbox consoles. While the announcement seemed typical, one standout comment from Bond could signal a major reveal about the future of Xbox hardware.
“Our aim is to create a seamless gaming experience that moves with you,” Bond noted. “You’ll be able to enjoy Xbox on your terms — across multiple devices and platforms, without being restricted to a single store or console.”
Xbox has long relied on buzzwords like “play anywhere,” but this marks the first time it has openly stated that its next-generation console won’t be tied to a single storefront. This suggests the possibility of supporting multiple digital stores — potentially including Steam — and positions the new console as even more PC-like in design and functionality.
Thinking Steam on Xbox means access to PlayStation exclusives? Not so fast. According to Xbox insider Jez Corden, Sony can prevent its Steam games from running on certain hardware, and it’s hard to imagine PlayStation letting an Xbox console serve as a gateway to its game lineup.
