Borderlands 4 Opens the Door for Fan Contributions In Development

Borderlands players have a history of banding together, and this year was no different. After Randy Pitchford made dismissive remarks about pricing and “real fans,” many pushed back publicly, telling him he could keep the game if that’s how he felt.

It didn’t help that Borderlands 4’s Collector’s Edition omitted the game itself and required powerful PCs just to run. Now, Gearbox appears to be tapping into fan enthusiasm in a new way — by allowing players to name a Legendary weapon for the next installment.

In a fan-driven campaign shared on Twitter, gamers have three days to vote on a Legendary weapon name, shaping a small but memorable piece of Borderlands 4.

This playful bracket-style competition pits potential names against each other, and in the end, the final two selected will form the weapon’s complete name in Borderlands 4.

Fans visiting the Borderlands 4 site are currently picking their favorite name combinations in a live bracket, with choices like Fallen Bane, Midnight Howl, and Chaos Bite all in the running.

There’s no word yet on whether the name will influence the weapon’s design, but the process is a great example of positive community engagement. Let’s hope Chaos Bite bites hard.

Borderlands 4

Gearbox and 2K are teaming up again for Borderlands 4. It’s a direct sequel to Borderlands 3 and continues the franchise’s over-the-top action and looting fun.

The game drops on September 12, 2025, for PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC. The Switch 2 version is coming later.

The game basically sticks to its roots as a looter shooter from a first-person view, with action-RPG elements. Gearbox promises a smooth experience with no loading screens when exploring the world.
