Pokémon Legends: Z-A: Announced over a year ago, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is the next big step following Legends: Arceus.
Set in a post-X & Y Kalos region, the story unfolds in Lumiose City as it undergoes a major transformation, offering a fresh perspective compared to the historical lens of its predecessor.
10 Legendary Pokémon Expected to Be In Pokémon Legends Z-A
Even though the title of Pokémon Legends: Z-A centers on a specific Legendary Pokémon, longtime fans are speculating which other rare legends could make the cut.
With inspiration from Legends: Arceus and the confirmed return of Mega Evolution, these 10 Legendary Pokémon stand out as strong possibilities for the game’s October launch.
10. Mewtwo
Arguably the most famous Legendary Pokémon, Mewtwo holds a notable link to the Kalos region. Mega Mewtwo Y was the first Mega Evolution revealed ahead of Pokémon X & Y, and it initially fueled speculation of a new Pokémon—“Mewthree”—before Mega Evolution was confirmed as Gen 6’s signature twist.
Mewtwo’s dual Mega Evolutions were version-exclusive in Pokémon X & Y, and it was only accessible in the Unknown Dungeon after players entered the Hall of Fame. Given Mega Evolution’s confirmed return in Pokémon Legends: Z-A, it makes sense that Mewtwo could be awarded after completing the main story.
9. Legendary Birds
Outside of Mewtwo, Pokémon X & Y featured just three non-Gen 6 Legendaries that didn’t require transfers—Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres. Post-Elite Four, one of the birds would roam the Kalos map, and the version you encountered depended on your starter Pokémon.
With Pokémon Legends: Z-A confirming Chikorita, Tepig, and Totodile as its starters, fans speculate that the Legendary bird trio might roam Lumiose City again, determined by the starter chosen.
This idea isn’t far-fetched, as Legends: Arceus included several roaming Legendaries, including Enamorus, a new addition to the Forces of Nature.
8. Latias & Latios
While Latias and Latios originated in Gen 3, their connection to Gen 6 is significant. The Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire remakes revived their relevance with Mega Evolutions and purple-themed designs, setting them apart from their original red and blue variants.
The return of every Mega Evolution in Pokémon Legends: Z-A hasn’t been confirmed yet, but some, including Mega Altaria from Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, are already in. Should more Megas return, powerful Dragon/Psychic-types may rise to the top of the metagame.
7. Rayquaza
Pokémon Legends: Z-A would feel incomplete without Rayquaza, one of the strongest Pokémon ever created. Introduced in Emerald and given a fearsome Mega Evolution in Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire, Rayquaza boasted 180 Attack and Special Attack, along with the devastating move Dragon Ascent.
Its green coloring even thematically matches Zygarde, making it a perfect fit. Just don’t waste your Master Ball too early—you’ll want it for this beast.
6. Xerneas
Even if Pokémon Legends: Z-A leans toward Zygarde, it’s hard to imagine Xerneas not making the cut. As the elegant mascot of Pokémon X and the original Fairy-type Legendary, it’s a staple among competitive players.
Perhaps it will get a new 10%, 50%, or 100% form—mirroring Zygarde—or take a simpler route with a Mega Evolution.
5. Yveltal
Yveltal’s appearance in Pokémon Legends: Z-A is practically a given if Xerneas is involved. The dark and dangerous counterpart to Xerneas’ serenity, Yveltal might appeal to players seeking power over peace.
A potential Mega Evolution or alternate form could give it the edge—although Zygarde, the third member of the trio, is expected to play the starring role.
4. Zygarde
Pokémon Legends: Z-A finally gives Zygarde the spotlight denied in Pokémon X & Y. Despite previously appearing in its 10%, Core, and 100% forms in Sun & Moon, this Legendary now takes center stage.
With the 10% Forme confirmed via trailers, its inclusion is all but guaranteed. What’s uncertain is whether 100% will remain Zygarde’s peak—or if a brand-new Mega Evolution will push it even further.
3. Diancie
Even though Diancie is a Mythical Pokémon, Pokémon Legends: Z-A seems like the perfect opportunity to reintroduce it in a more player-friendly way. Back in Gen 6, it was locked behind limited-time events.
Legends: Arceus changed the game by letting players catch Darkrai and Shaymin through save data. Diancie’s Mega Evolution and lore link with Carbink only make its inclusion in the Kalos-focused title more likely.
2. Hoopa
Few Mythical Pokémon from Gen 6 are as intriguing as Hoopa. While it debuted as an event-exclusive Psychic/Ghost-type, its transformation into the mighty Hoopa Unbound via the Prison Bottle revealed a Psychic/Dark powerhouse that felt like a Mega Evolution gone wild.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A offers a great opportunity to dive into its lore—and fans have noted that Hoopa Unbound’s appearance shares visual traits with Zygarde 100%, suggesting there may be a hidden link between them.
1. Volcanion
While not officially confirmed, Volcanion feels like a natural fit for Pokémon Legends: Z-A. As the only Fire/Water-type Pokémon, its steam-driven nature and mountain origins make it an ideal candidate to support the energy transformation of Lumiose City.
Given Legends: Arceus’s inclusion of Mythicals like Darkrai and Shaymin, fans have reason to hope Volcanion will be available either at launch or through future DLC.
